Who we are?

Pa Kua is an ancient Chinese wisdom that we apply in eight different disciplines. It ranges from in-depth training for body and mind to a workout for your entire body with a variety of movements and exercises.

As part of the Pa Kua International League, all our courses follow the same philosophy. There are no competitions or hard contact exercises. Everyone practices within their own limits, and we help set new goals and work toward achieving them.

We offer weekly classes, a wide range of individual courses, individual self-defense classes for various groups, workshops for companies, and weekend retreats for companies. An annual meeting in Europe invites all PaKua students to participate in a weekend full of fun and good times among friendly people.

You can also visit our worldwide website: www.pakua.com . Here you will find all the information about our main non-profit organization, the Pa-Kua International League.

Instructor Detlef Laabs-Wrieden

Hello, I, Detlef, started training in 2010 as one of the first students in Stuhr Brinkum, together with my son.

Now after 15 years, I have achieved a black belt in swordsmanship and martial arts.

Staying on the “ball” or sword for 15 years to learn the different techniques and characteristics of Pa Kua and then passing these on to students is a challenge that is fun.

Approaching each person individually and sharing the knowledge we have learned with each other becomes an exciting experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Can I test before signing up?

You can book a free trial training here on our website and get to know our studio. Up to two trial trainings are free, then you can get a picture of whether our courses are something for you. And take the opportunity to ask us any questions you have.

What exactly is Pa-Kua and why is it different from other martial arts?

Pa-Kua is an ancient Chinese system with eight disciplines (e.g. Martial arts, acrobatics, tai chi), which harmonises body and mind. Unlike many martial arts, we have no competition or tough contact - instead, the focus is on personal growth, respect and overcoming one's own limits in a supportive atmosphere.

I've never practiced martial arts, archery, or acrobatics before. Is this something for me?

All our courses are suitable for beginners. We always help students with less knowledge and always work within their own limits. It's important that everyone feels comfortable in our courses.

The martial arts course includes sparring and strong physical contact.

The way we train doesn't involve hard contact or sparring with other people. We use a punching bag or pads to practice hitting something, rather than punching your peers.

Are there discounts for family members?

Families receive a 10% discount. For example, if two siblings attend training, we offer a 10% discount on the total monthly fee.

Is Pa Kua a franchise?

Pa Kua is not a franchise. We are part of the Pa Kua International League, a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading Pa Kua knowledge. Each instructor receives free permission to use all logos and teaching methods, and can teach one class per week or open their own studio without paying any fees.

At what age can children train?

Children can train in our martial arts classes starting at age 5 or 6. For archery or sword training, the best age is 10.

My schedule is different every week. How can I train regularly?

There are many regular classes every week and you are sure to find different times that work with your schedule.

If I have to work late and miss my class, can I attend another class?

Yes, you can make up any missed lessons by attending one of our weekly classes. This can be during the same week or in subsequent weeks. It's important to us that you attend and don't miss a class, so we want to give you this flexibility.

Can I deduct the monthly fees from my taxes?

We are not financial advisors and therefore cannot accept liability. If you are an adult and continue to practice with us, you will become an instructor. This is part of every student's normal path, even if you never teach. Therefore, our courses are like vocational training, because after you become an instructor, you can earn additional income by teaching.

Do I have to buy a uniform to practice when I sign up?

No, you can start by wearing comfortable workout clothes. After a few weeks or months, we recommend purchasing a proper uniform, as you'll feel more comfortable in the right clothes.

I don't have a bow and arrow or a bamboo sword to practice with. Do you offer equipment?

In our studios, we have all the equipment you need to practice. If you'd like, you can also purchase your own equipment; we can help you with that and give you good recommendations on what and where to buy it.

Do you do tournaments or competitions?

We don't hold competitions because we believe that the only challenge for each student should be to do better than the day before, not better than someone else.

How long does the contract last?

The contract doesn't have an end date, but you can cancel at any time. If you cancel within the first month, everything will be canceled, and you won't have to pay anything. After the first month, there's a three-month cooling-off period. For example, if you cancel in mid-February, you'll still have to pay for March, April, and May. But of course, you can continue to attend training during this time.

What are the costs for the different courses?

The monthly fees start at about €50–80 per course (depending on discipline and frequency), with discounts for families (10%) or additional bookings. There are no hidden costs - the first month is on trial, and equipment is provided in the studio. More detailed prices can be found on our registration page or by e-mail request.

How does Pa-Kua support personal development, e.g. B. through tests or certificates?

There are no formal exams or belts, as the focus is on inner progress ("better than yesterday"). Instead, we celebrate successes in the group, and committed students can become instructors – like our coaches Detlef Laabs-Wrieden or Christopher Adamkiewicz, who have risen through passion and continuous learning.

Which of the eight Pa-Kua disciplines are available in your studio and who are they intended for?

In Bremen/Stuhr we offer courses in martial arts, acrobatics, archery, sword fighting, tai chi, rhythm training, pa-kua chi (energy work) and Chinese yoga (sintony). They are suitable for beginners and advanced, from children from 5 years to seniors - choose according to your interest: e.g. Acrobatics for fun and agility or Tai Chi for relaxation.

How does a weekly course differ from individual lessons or workshops?

Weekly courses are continuously building up and promoting community (e.g. 60 minutes per week). Individual lessons are flexible for personal topics such as self-Defence, while workshops (e.g. For companies or weekend retreats) are thematically focussed and combine fun with learning - ideal for beginners or groups.

Can I combine several disciplines, e.g. B. Martial arts with Tai Chi?

Absolutely! Many students train in 2–3 disciplines in parallel to have a round training – e.g. B. Martial Arts for Strength and Tai Chi for Balance. Talk to our trainers (such as Master Rodolfo Oliva or Master Patricia Veigel-Runte) who will create an individual plan, without overloading.

What are the benefits of Pa-Kua training for my everyday life?

Pa-Kua not only improves fitness, flexibility and self-Defence, but also reduces stress, strengthens self-confidence and promotes inner peace through elements such as meditation and breathing. Many participants report better sleep, more energy and a more positive attitude to challenges in professional or private life.

Is Pa-Kua suitable for people with health limitations?

Yes, all courses are customised to your limits. Whether back pain, obesity or anxiety - our trainers advise you personally and offer modified exercises. We recommend consulting a doctor in advance and integrating gentle disciplines such as Tai Chi or Pa-Kua Chi for getting started.

What is the Pa-Kua International League and how do I benefit from it?

The League is a non-profit organisation since 1976 that distributes Pa-Kua worldwide (e.g. In Argentina, Brazil and Germany). As a member, you have access to annual European meetings, retreats and a global network – for inspiration, exchange and deeper knowledge, without franchise fees.

Are there online or hybrid courses if I can't always be on site?

Currently, we are focussing on face-to-face training for direct exchange and safety. In the future, we are planning hybrid options - contact us for the latest information.
